It's the music

That reminds me of my college friend and neighbor, Deb. She was presented with the "I don't remember what I ate yesterday" line, and her answer was boss. Deb said that, in order to compare apples to apples, the line should be, "Do I recall what I ate X number of years ago, versus yesterday?"

We've regularly stated that music = life, and it is fruitless, to try and parse them out. So when we hear music from, for example, 1992, it can make us re-live those times, or at least bring back what we felt and went through. It's less about my memory ability, and more about what the music's impact originally was.

During my senior year at UCSC (1992-93), I had the Sony/Adcom/AQ/Pinnacle stereo. So everyone wanted to come over, and check it out. Deb lived in the same complex. She and her roommate would occasionally come over. Everyone misses those nights, where we'd stay late, and then go into those juicy and interesting conversations. Deb was using her finger, to twirl her straight blonde hair. The Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson version of "Beauty And The Beast" came on. It triggered something inside of Deb.

"OMG," gasped Deb, "Last year, this song was hot, and I had a crush on a guy, Tommy, in my psych class. I would try to sit slightly behind him, so I could stare at him, without him seeing me."

Deb continued, "After class, I would, you know....follow him. I found that, on Mondays, he usually went to McHenry [Library]. Wherever Tommy sat - *giggle* - and he was always by himself - I would find a desk or seat, where I could watch him. So then I - you know - followed him some more, and he lived in Stevenson [down the hill from where we lived]. And Tommy was in the same dorm [but different floor] as some of my girlfriends. So I ask them if I could - you know - come over."

"So I bring my stuff, but before I see my girls, I try to find where Tommy lives. Shit! He lived on an all-guys floor. So as a girl, if I just hang around, I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Oh, shoot, and they didn't have any name tags on their doors. So I go to their bathroom, and hope that Tommy comes in. Or, maybe I should just walk up and down the halls, and if some dude walks by, I can say that I'm Tommy's friend, but don't know which room is his. OMG, OMG, OMG, I picture him coming in to take a shower, and should I - you know - take the stall next to him? And OMG, what would he think about a girl coming into their bathroom? He'd think I'm some other dude's girlfriend, and, f---..."

Deb's roommate blurted out and laughed, "OMG Deb, you were stalking this guy!"

I asked, "So did anything happen?"

Deb answered, "Tommy catches me staring at him at the library. So I have to think quick. I go, 'You look familiar. Are you in Calculus 2?' And, f---, I'm too messed up, and can't make the talk last longer. So I slink away, and stop following him. ...Oh! So back in our Psych class, I just make that silly smile, and wave. I can't say s-- to him, and he doesn't know I'm totally crushing on him."

Other integrated amps mess around, not just in terms of sonics, but in terms of ergonomics, heat, noise, aesthetics, features, and having enough volume control steps at the low end. I think you know that the Simaudio 600i is like finding Tommy at the library, confidently walking up to him, and saying, "Hi! My name is Deb. Aren't you in Professor Smith's Psych 2 class?"

In a large room, with large speakers, going up to the 700i is like having the confidence to pull up a chair next to Tommy, and saying, "Do you mind if I sit here? What did you think about the midterm?"

Going up to the Simaudio 740P/760A is like having the composure to handle whatever Tommy's reaction is, whether he wants to be alone, asks if you want to study the next chapter together, or even compares answers on the homework questions.

With these Simaudo models, you do not have to be a creeper or stalker. There are myriad other brands of integrated amps. If one makes you feel good about being a creeper or stalker, go for it! The thing is, with life events like these, you may forget details, you may get the sequencing wrong, you may forget people's names. But their impacts remain.

Because breakfast was mundane, we may not recall specifically what we ate yesterday. But when we look back to 2020, we will recall which ones of us had jobs, which could be done from home.

BTW, UCSC's McHenry Library may still be closed. But its top floor houses the Grateful Dead Archives. I graduated way before that was setup, and have never seen it. I wonder how many Inmates have gone there.
