RE: Sounds to me like he is closing the doors.

I doubt there would be many buyers for a bricks and mortar high end audio shop these days, especially in this fairly frugal neighborhood. Older folks don't have the dough any longer, younger folks could care less. I've got five of the "younger" folks (age 21 to 54) and none of them care about audio. Music, sure. Audio, meh. I could never make it as a shop, wouldn't want to. And what's interesting is that most of my customers aren't from anywhere around here, not even in Massachusetts. I love shops, especially books shops and (long gone) record shops. But most people don't shop in shops these days, as we all know.
