Welcome to the "internet of things"

We're coming into an era where every product needs to find an excuse to be internet connected so it can mine user data.

I just bought an Anova sous vide cooker. It has a smartphone app to monitor and control it, calculate cooking times, view recipes etc. And sure enough, the app insists you create an online account, mines data on your phone, and won't let you use it to control the cooker until you share your location. I promptly uninstalled it before I ever had a chance to use it.
