It is with great sadness and personal loss that I write about the passing of my mentor and friend Rainer Boesch. I first met Rainer in the summer of 1973 in Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland, where he opened my brain to the world of electroacoustic music and free improvisation at l'Institut de Hautes Etudes Musicales (IHEM). He was, and is, a giant in the field of electroacoustic music and musique concrete. As a student, he studied under Pierre Shaeffer and Olivier Messian. As a mentor, he taught me to listen to sounds, and to think about how to use them.I recently learned that he passed away in January of 2014. I knew that he had cardio-vascular issues for many years (he told me that he could no longer drink wine or eat cheese), but I always thought that I'd see him, and learn from him, one more time.
We hadn't talked or emailed for the past several years. Now, I know why.
Rest in peace, my friend.
