My 9 year old Sony AVD S500ES has died. (It needs a new Power Board.) The repair will likely cost about $200. I'm not sure if I should spend the money to fix it, or if I should spend more to replace it.
My system is not "high end." It consists of the AVD S500ES, a pair of Vienna Acoustics Haydn loudspeakers, a Velodyne SPL-800II subwoofer, and a wireless Squeezebox.
I have a small SACD collection, but I mostly listen to MP3s that I converted from my CD collection using L.A.M.E. I do not use the AVD S500ES to play DVDs.
Since I do not use any of the Sony's home theater capabilities, an integrated amp and an SACD player could replace it.
My sense is that I'd have to spend a lot more than $200 to match the quality of the Sony, but I would like to hear your opinions.
Jeff
