I have brought back two Leica cameras back from Germany in the last 18 months on separate trips valued at over $4,000 . I declared both at full value and was waved through with no duty. Not to mention all the various audio crap (including Amplifiers) I brought back from China when I was working there and was never charged any duty. Be honest, polite and declare everything and chances are you will not have to pay. I did have an aquaintance once who tried to argue with customs and was detained at JFK for 6 hours so attitude and polite behavior do matter.
