If I understand you correctly, you have the concept wrong. If the wires are present (they may not be) for the alternative voltage, they connect to the primary transformer windings at different places. This results in a different windings ratio which is what you are after. All you need to do is hook up the proper set of wires.

Your math is true if you connect a 220v wired transformer to a 110v source. That's exactly why you need to switch to the alternate set of primary wires in order to boost the secondary voltage back up the the proper value.

I feel uneasy giving this advice. If the OP does not know these rules then he/she is probably not qualified to do the work or make the proper judgments. If you screw it up you may have a fried amp (or worse) on your hands. Do be careful.

These transformers are generally called universal transformers and are common in modern equipment. Older equipment may not have a universal transformer.
