I had a $500 DAC fry with a power surge. I took it to a Audio Repair shop that I had great luck with and they tried to fix it. They had the problem isolated to a PCB with a Chip on it. To get the new board and have it fixed would have resulted in a charge of around $250...They suggested that I use the money to buy a used one, or put the money towards a different DAC (which I did - Good Suggestion). I still have the Non-Working DAC that I might use for parts as I have another working DAC just like it. This particular model of DAC was very sensitive to voltage changes.
I think, you'll eventually run into a Faulty part, which will cost more than the DAC is worth, if you can even get it. There are a lot of good DACs out there for under $750 today. I think this is the line of thinking that the E-Bay Seller went down. - Just my 2 Cents worth.
