Fantja, since you seem interested in my impressions & perceptions of my "new" SA10, I will preface this by telling you that I spent a significant portion of my adult life (up until 2006) as an aircraft mechanic, & I didn't spend enough time worrying about hearing protection. Ergo, over the years I have experienced some hearing loss.
Which probably begs the question as to why I even bother pursuing this hobby & buying the gear that I have bought.
But I will say that I can hear the difference between sounds crappy & sounds pretty good.
Unfortunately, I am not articulate enough, nor can I often put my finger at absolute certain (or definite) points of reference. Broadly speaking, I am finding the SA10 (when I have good source material) to be more musical & to exude more "presence." (I put "presence" in quotes because, again, I am not articulate enough to explain exactly what I mean.) I have noticed, on certain CDs, tiny bits of detail coming out that I was probably hearing, but hadn't really paid attention to until I heard the CD on the SA10.
One specific example that I actually can give is: I have a Sheffield Labs test & setup CD that features (among other things) Doug Sax & Rodger Skoff doing a walk around. Now in general terms, in my small listening room, I get an enhanced perception of the depth & breadth of the room Rodger & Doug are coming from. (At least I THINK I do.) But, until I heard them walking around on the SA10, I was never paying attention to the sound of their footsteps. I have no doubt that I was always HEARING those footsteps, but I was not really NOTICING them before. One of them is carrying a shaker thingy that he uses to punctuate his position in the room, & there are moments wheaten he is walking that the shaker thingy inadvertently clatters just a little bit. This is also something that I am sure I was always HEARING, but just not NOTICING.
With the above paragraph typed, perhaps I was listening closer the first time I fired the SA10 up & put Doug & Rodger in. & then of course, once you've heard something, it is kind of hard to unhear it. But, on the other side of that coin, I have played that walk around at least one hundred times (easily) & I never had that (real or imagined) epiphany before.
For now, with my inability to type my aural experiences descriptively, that's all I can give you. But as I continue listening to this thing, if I should have any "aha" moments, I will keep you posted.
