That's a stretch. The real explanation is with audiophiles who embrace anything scarce, and the manufacturers who cater to such beliefs. Perhaps the PCM-1704 does present a "certain sound". Even if it does, that only matters to those who like that sound.

There are several DACs out there based on different chips and technologies that sound excellent. I'm not saying they all sound exactly the same but to conclude that PCM-1704 based DACs are better than any Delta-Sigma design is pure fantasy. IMHO, of course.
