The BDP-Pi came out in 2016.
A Darko review (see link) compares the Bryston vs DIY Pi-3b set up.
As Cut-Throat mentions, it's not a secret.
Now the latest Pi-4 is quite a leap from the older Pi. So technology is giving us more for less. Kudos to Raspberry and more choices/benefits for us.
A true endorsement for Raspberry when Bryston includes it in their latest BDA dac/preamp/streamer combo.
So like anything, a little research gives you the option to save some money.
As the Darko review states, DIY is not for everyone. Some inmates can have their Raspberry set up over a couple of nights. Some spend considerably longer.
Also don't forget to factor in what the cost difference ends up being when either product is sold.
How much will someone pay for a used Bryston vs someone's DIY Raspberry set up?
Admittedly, even if you get "zero" back for the Pi, the Pi will certainly have the advantage. But the net difference saved will be narrower than originally perceived.
