Basicly (very!!!), the higher the source impedence, the more effect cables will have on how things sound. Passive volume controls all increase source impedence. For this reason, the Electronic Visionary Systems (http://www.tweakaudio.com) attenuaters that attach to the power-amp inputs may be the best or at least most economical passive solution. I've been very happy with mine.Otherwise, it's frankly a mix and match game to come up with a combination of gear and cables that is the most pleasing. This is one reason why passive must be looked at as only potentially better (due to simplicity) but not absolutely better when everything is treated as a system and you just want to enjoy some music.
