Kimber PBJ, Part 4

In Fall 1993, the Bay Area was hot and dry. One of our favorite new albums was The Ocean Blue's Beneath The Rhythm And Sound. Most of my friends were still in college. We could actually afford to lash up our systems, with the $62/meter Kimber PBJ line-level interconnect.

Uh oh, a curling iron. In those days, YouTube did not exist, so you could not easily find free how-to videos. The thin and flexible Kimber PBJ easily coiled into a circle. However, when you uncoiled it, the PBJ refused to lie straight. It twisted, bent, and warped, like our hair, when we attempted to use a curling iron.

We'd really only do hair for semi-formal events, which were few and far between. Nevertheless, our butcher jobs with the curling iron made us accepting of the unpretentious tri-braid Kimber PBJ.

This is as straight and unkinked the PBJ gets. Yeah, yeah, if the length were slightly shorter, it wouldn't droop and twist as much.

Although the PBJ costs more than twice it did in 1993, it is still an admirable performer for the price. It is relatively uncolored and accurate. Perhaps its greatest inaccuracy is a loss of breath, treble extension, and space, in the top 1/3 of the recorded soundstage. Other interconnects will do a better job of preserving image stability and size. Other interconnects will more effortlessly preserve the music's wide-open dynamics. Other interconnects will do a better job of maintaining bass depth, power, and mass. Other interconnects will keep the instrumental textures cleaner and purer. Other interconnects will interfere less, with the sounds of brushes and drumsticks hitting cymbals.

But the Kimber PBJ's overall balance yields a "this is good enough, let's move on" attitude or spirit. As my friend Scylla says, "It's kind of like, yeah, I know my hair is messed up, but you shrug it off, go to the ball, and exceed your low expectations."
