Actually, I think we're on the same page.
Years ago, I provided technical support to a staff of 20 technicians at an office equipment company, and the two things that drove me nuts were troubleshooting by rote, and placing a parts call without being fairly certain that the part you're ordering will actually fix the problem. If you don't understand how those systems operate in and of themselves, plus how they interact with each other, how can you possibly hope to understand where those processes are breaking down? It's not enough for me to know that something sounds good to me - I want to know why it sounds better than something else to me, and how it interacts with the rest of my system so I can extrapolate that understanding to other areas in my setup. Some people can perhaps afford to just throw money at it until they're happy. I don't happen to be one of them.
