AudioQuest CV-4, Part 3

In June 1992, most of my old friends were females, who had just finished their freshman year of college. Hard to believe, but they were just 18- and 19-years old. My family had gone to Honolulu for the summer, so I was home alone in San Francisco. My friends would come over to my place.

The AudioQuest Type 4 speaker cable let in Sophie B. Hawkins' "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," which was still open yet not hard and distorted. That allowed the music to surround, envelop, and take over. The song is about the singer observing a woman in an abusive relationship. The homoeroticism notwithstanding, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" could lead to an awakening, amongst my friends. They were nerd girls, who were fast and accurate in academics. But most did not express themselves.

We did not see a video for "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover." Unbeknownst to us, MTV had refused (banned) to play it. Hard to tell, but that's Melissa Etheridge on backup vocals.

We would go around San Francisco at night. Here, we were downtown at 10:19p. We would actually go to "adult entertainment" stores. Now, if you were an individual, these places could be intimidating and seedy. But we usually numbered around 6, so we went as a group. And our youngest, ACS, who had turned 18 in March 1992, was the most enthusiastic and cavalier, about frequenting the "adult entertainment" stores.

The girls would walk past the magazines, and then find the video tapes arranged by genre. When renting or purchasing, the girls had to show ID, LOL!

When we stood in front of the sex toys, ACS would then bust out her "Oh, don't act you like you don't do it" line. The nerd girls would blush and squirm, but ACS was right. Problem was, in those days, you'd get no help from staff. You didn't know what was what. And as college kids, we did not have money, so these weren't trivial purchases.

So then my friends decided to go to Good Vibrations, on Valencia Street. Regardless of Sophie B. Hawkins, Good Vibrations catered to women, and sported a helpful and positive attitude. Again, this was a real awakening for my female friends, and in a way, the AQ Type 4 played a part in that.

One of my audiophile friends had to stick in an "Oh c'mon, a speaker cable can't be that good!"

Well, no, but a speaker cable is vital, in holding up the back end of the audio chain. If the music is allowed to speak, then your life is enhanced. This is why my friends cherished that AQ Type 4, and why we are curious about her more modern sibling, the CV-4.

Okay, please set aside the sex toys. The main feature of the CV-4 is its DBS (Dielectric Bias System) battery pack. It straps on to the speaker end of the cable.

Via a mini-headphone jack, the battery pack applies a charge. Note that this CV-4 (its owner thinks he bought it in 2007 or 2008) came with a 48V battery pack. By the 2010s, AQ switched to a 72V pack. According to AQ, "The exceptionally simple design uses a wire down the middle of the cable, which is simply an extension of a battery's anode. This wire is attached to negative (-) of a DBS battery pack, and nothing else. It is not in the signal path and has no interaction with the signal. Depending on the model of interconnect (analog or digital) or speaker cable, an existing foil "shield" is used as the DBS anode by connecting it to positive (+) of the DBS battery pack. The negative side of a battery is nothing; it's just an empty reservoir. Again, there is no interaction with signal flow and no extra connections are introduced into the signal path."

In the 48V model, the compartment slides off, like an infrared remote control. In order to add up to the 48V, four 12V A23 batteries are used.

Press the button, and if the green light shines, the batteries are good. In this CV-4, the original batteries from the 2000s are still in use, still going strong.
