OK Dan, I take it you're running direct from the piano to the board? If so, that's why you're getting "bad" sound, as you need to match the signal from the output of the piano into the board. That is the simple explanation-it's more detailed than that but you get the picture.
Run 1/4" to 1/4" from the piano to the direct box then XLR to XLR to the board. I would suggest using a passive direct box, as it's easier to set-up. Also, you don't need the most expensive one out there but I wouldn't get the cheapest either. (Think Whirlwind) The only reason you would really need an active DI is if you got hiss, which prob. won't happen w/keys or piano.
You can also run 1/4" out of the DI (if so equipped) to an amp (if you have one) to use as a monitor.
