Oistrakh's and Richter's 1969 live recording of Shostie's Violin Sonata is the best you're ever going to get! The cover is stunning as well. I'm just finihsing up Stephen Walsh's 2 volume bio of Stravinsky and Liz Wilson's bio on Shostakovich is next. Just was led to a great site "Shostakovichiana". It has just about anything you can ask for....and more.....even a positive review on Wilson's book!
I"m FINALLY picking up my new TT today.......YEAHHHH!!!
fabulous! I love the viola sonata also. best, stephanie

As usual i'm "green" with envy. I just scored the symphonies nr. 6&11/Concertgebouw Orch./Haitink on Decca. A digital 80s recording but pretty good nonetheless.

It's UK EMI HQS 1369, although it has the typical Melodiya/EMI record label......only in purple instead of red.
