Hey John.I just thought of something regarding "the challenge". When recording off the LPs to digital, I'd record them while monitoring through the speakers at the same level you will be listening during the "shootout".
Here's why: If you record vinyl to digital as I do, with very low bass level or headphones to eliminate acoustic feedback, the CD will probably sound inherently different than the vinyl just because of the absence of acoustic feedback. Even if the turntable is well-isolated, there's still a possibility that a trace amount of acoustic feedback could ever-so-slightly influence the sonics.
After getting the levels set for the music recording session, I'd probably record a test-tone track from a test LP to a CD without altering the record level. Then you can go back and match the levels of the turntable and CD player precisely for the auditioning session.
I'm sure you already thought of that stuff, but I thought I'd just throw that out there.
Follow Ups:
You are absolutely right!I intend to copy the LPs for the comparison test with speakers playing a the same volume that will be used in the listening comparison.
Furthermore, I intend to copy a signal from a test record for level matching in addition to a rectangular waveform with a 30% duty cycle for assessing absolute polarity using an oscilloscope. My DAC has an absolute polarity switch in addition to a volume control and I want to make sure the comparison is done with the same absolute polarity.
If you think of anything else, please let me know. I want to cover all the bases and make the most valid comparison possible.
Should be a fun experiment, anyway. Enjoy!
John, won't this depend a lot on the digital front end? cd players have their colorations too.
....maybe not.
