Approximately, what is the distance between the bottom of the cartridge
and the record, once the turntable is setup completely?I've recently bought a used MMF-5 with the stock cartridge, and after
setting up the turntable, the distance between the cartridge and the
record is ~1mm. Is this normal?
Follow Ups:
I just had a lowrider and realized my VTF was 2.2 rather than 1.4....that'll cause your issue real quick.
Looks defo too low to me as well,a freind of mine recently bought a factory set-up rb250/1012 on a similair table.Everything was out, including where the cart was sitting in the headshell.Check with protractor 1st,then vta.
.....it's too low, I use the same cartridge ( and have used in different setups ) it's never been that low at all, infact i've never had a problem with warps or even a hint of the cart touching the record....
What VTF do you have it set at. You should have a stylus pressure guage. It may not have been set up correctly at the factory. The stylus could also be defective.
The VTF is 1.75g, recommended by the MMF-5's manual. Even if I lower
the VTF to say, 1.50g, the "clearance" is still pretty much the same.
Not sure. How does it sound? How do you know it's 1.75g? Did you use a stylus guage or go by what the counter weight says?
I've used the counter weight to measure it, but I really doubt that
its too low due to high VTF, since even if I lower the VTF, its still
the same.In this photo, the tonearm is in free air, to side of the platter.
As you can see, the stylus prolongs only about 1.5mm from
the bottom of the cartridge.
It's too difficult to tell whats going on from the photo's. There may not be anything wrong. You do need to get a stylus force guage. The Goldrings do tend to ride low. If it sounds good then I think your fine. Like I said, get a guage.
Here is a photo I've just took. Its not touching the record, but the distance is very thin, like 0.5mm.

Are you sure your tonearm is parallel with the record surface (VTA)?
However, I see the problem of clearance between the cartridge bottom and the record is caused by the seemingly too-short cantilever. I'd feel the same consternation knowing even a slight warp can cause the tonearm to bounce up, then down on a record. Small undulations and warps are hard to see! Have you experienced any skipping on any records so far?
Goldring states the stock cartridge should have a VTA of 24% @ 1.7 grams nominal VTF. Either there is too much tracking force or the suspension of the cartridge is collapsing. There should be more room than .5 mm as you said. As others have said the Goldring 1000 series cartridges are low riders, but I don't think yours should be riding as low as you state.
The VTA on the MMF-5 is set at the factory, and my table has been
used for only a few weeks.I don't know how to measure it precisely, but it does look right,
and visually, a few degrees forward or backword won't make much of
a difference in the distance between the cartridge and the record.
I first bought a Shure V15VxMR which made a nice change (rode a lot higher too), but I broke the stylus. I now have an AT0C9. It rides pretty low, but not like that Grado.
I've just measured the distance, its actually even less than 1mm,
something like 0.5mm!I've measured it by folding a piece of paper and placing it under
the cartridge halfway from the back. Repeated the same, until it
started to touch the cartrige, then measured the width of the
folded paper by a ruler.
You can't possibly track even the smallest warp with that setup.
I don't have a MMF but I had the 1012 and using a 1042. These Goldrings are very low riders and are not very tolerable playing warped records. The 1042 mounted on my TT has clearance of no more than 1.5mm and the body of the cartridge do scrape a warped record.
