Anybody had the chance to hear the new Sutherland Ph3D yet? I just got the new catalog in the mail on Saturday, and it's a lot closer to my pricepoint than the PhD. Not much info in the catalog, and a couple of pix on the website. Looks like they've replaced the autosensor/shutoff with a simple on/off, and a significant reduction in cosmetics costs, but hard to tell what other corners were cut to reach the $1K pricepoint down from $3K. Anyone have any more info?

is it mm/mc or just mm? ho mc is not the question.

I haven't heard the new "budget" version, but the $3K PhD a real sleeper; i.e., it will put you into a musical coma. It kills the music's pacing, its dynamics are compressed, and it has all the rhythmic bounce of a lump of wet clay.Yes, it's remarkably quiet and that low noise floor brings out lots of pretty detail, but your foot won't tap, and your ass won't shake, and you'll start to wonder what's on TV...
What would you recomend either new or used in this price range?
My tastes run squarely toward musical involvement over audiophile sound effects. With that in mind, the Art Audio Vinyl One is the best phono stage I've heard to date. You can occasionally find em used at Audiogon for around $1500 give or take a few hundred.I did a little shootout of three popular phono preamps in this basic price range that you might want to check out:
