Can anyone tell me the phase to be used for the following LP brands:1. Universal
2. ECM
3. Varese Sarabande
4. Erato
5. Claves
6. Westminster

... for your own investigations, I'd suggest that Westminsters are probably in normal polarity and Eratos in inverted polarity. The one United Artist disc I listened to was in normal polarity. At least I think so. This is all based on a pretty small sample. FWIW, my own label judgments pretty much match those printed in that issue of Ultimate Audio in which the late Lars Fredel addressed the whole polarity issue.
... I'm pretty confident that the ECMs are recorded -- consistently -- in normal polarity. I haven't experimented much with the others, and wonder if you could elaborate on what you mean by "Universal." I would hazard a guess that the Eratos are in inverted polarity, if only because so many European labels are (the Decca group and EMI in particular). But it's only a guess. I'll listen and check back. Those here who believe there is no consistency (i.e., whether a label's records are usually recorded in normal or inverted polarity) are more wrong than right, IMHO. And polarity is easy enough to hear and determine which polarity is "right," but only if you have really polarity-coherent speakers and a reasonably high-def system. If you do, and once you start listening for it, it's easy enough to hear. If you don't, count your blessings.
Dave, thanks for help. Await your reply thread here.Sorry I made a mistake. I really mean 'United Artists', not Universal.
I am a new convert to listening to a LP in the correct phase. However I do not have a phase switch to do immediate A/B test and hence would like to rely on inmate's experience.
Indeed for those who still have reservation on the issue just try listening to a DGG label LP first in normal phase and then inverted phase.
I should have mentioned that, because the polarity differences are more pronounced than with any other label I know of. Mercury Living Presence and RCA Living Stereo also tend to be in inverted polarity. I'll get back to you tomorrow on the others, if I can find enough of some of them to come to any kind of conclusion.
do you mean polarity? Most records are going to be a mixture of slight phase anomalies, but in terms of absolute polarity, you shouldn't have to adjust.
If by "phase" you mean absolute polarity there is no answer. Each and every recording has its own correct polarity. With training, those who care about it can tell the difference. Most others don't care.
