I recently got a new Technics SL1210Mk2 and am loving it so far! It came with a super thick rubber turntable mat. This thing looks to be around 1/4" thick! I've tried listening with just this stock mat, stock mat + carbon fiber mat, and just the carbone fiber mat by itself to see what the difference might be.Just curious to hear what other inmates are using for mats on the Technics SL12xx turntables. Are you using the stock thick rubber mat or do you prefer a different mat?

I'm using the Denon DL160 with my Technics and I think it's a great combo. I ended up using the small weight plate that comes with the turntable when mounting the cartridge. Have any of you also done this when using the Denon 160 with this turntable? Any other tips you may have in properly using this cartridge with this turntable?

Thanks for replies everyone. So it seems that I should just keep the stock one on the turntable. Which is good because it means more money to spend on a different upgrade or more lp's!

I am still using the stock rubber mat on my 1210M5G. But I have
looked at some others...

I'm using the stock mat as well, but because of the height of the Audio-Technica cartridge I'm using I've needed to raise the mat up a little so that I still have the ability to adjust VTA with more range. I'm using a thin felt mat, cut to size, under the stock one.I don't know if that has changed the sound any. I'm like you....I'm loving the sound as is, ( especially with the KAB mods installed..highly recommended, BTW).
I think any changes in the sound of the Technics would be more affected by the platform that it's placed on than what kind or combination of mats you may use.. IMO
I think I prefer the stock mat with the thin carbon fiber mat on top. Mainly just because it gets rid of static.I'm going to look into getting a platform to place it upon. Any suggestions in this area? Thanks
Well...I use MDF platform that has threaded spikes for leveling with a piece of 1 inch marble cut to fit, on top. In between is a thin rubber mat. Makes for a very effective constrained layer damping.I think that what ever platform you use make sure it's very rigid and is decoupled from the shelf its placed upon.
The best isolation upgrade for the 1210mk2 would be for you to replace the stock feet with some Isonoe footers, available from KAB Electro-Acoustics. (www.kabusa.com)
This is a significant sonic upgrade, well worth the price, IMO
