It's good to hear that amongst the mayhem you were able to find useful info here :-)After the discussion a week ago, I have been looking to re-tube my preamp as well. Actaully, I was also looking for a tube tester, but no one seems to have them any more...

Hi,Yeah, there are a lot more good posts than bad. Way more. Back to the tubes, though -- I don't want to have to wait an hour to listen. I'm still not inclined to turn it off. Have you re-thought that? I mean, preamp tubes are cheap and seemingly plentiful. My order cost me $143 and I got a spare Mullard (my phono section only uses one 12AT7).
All pieces of equipment are different in this regard, but in the case of my Melos preamp, I just never shut it off unless I am going away for an extended period of time or if there is a powerful electrical storm approaching.Even with it in stand-by mode, I still have to activate it and run the tuner for 10-15 minutes or so before doing any listening.
The curious thing I discovered this week (not tube-related) is that my new cd player sounds a bit muffled, and lifeless when it is "cold". It requires a full 1 hour to come to blossom. So even that unit with a standby mode seems to need to be on and playing in order to reach its optimium. This discovery nearly ruined a "shoot-out" I was having with a couple of audiophile buddies last Friday.
Cheers,
