The ""HC" CBS 1/2 speed pretty high dollar for a series that isn't generally well thought of, is it one of the "good" ones? How does it compare to the recent Classics pressing? To the original?
Follow Ups:
I have the 180g Classic pressing (same lacquers as the newer 200g pressing, I believe) and prefer it over an early US Columbia pressing. But the standard pressing I have isn't bad. But this record was probably re-cut by Columbia countless times over the years, so it's probably a crapshoot as to whether one would get a decent pressing or not.Regardless this was not, is not and never will be an audiophile recording. So you need to decide whether the $30 Classic pressing is worth it over a $4 Columbia pressing.
The HC is not very good. Avoid it. I have a raft of versions, and to my ears, the Japanese Sony 25AP1274 is the best, closely followed by the Dutch CBS 80959.In general, the HC is muddy and ill-defined. The Japanese edition is clearer and has more punch. The recording is a sow's ear to begin with, so there's really no making a silk purse out of it. It's just degrees of mud.
If you are looking for audiophile Bruce, try to get a Dutch "Nebraska." It's a home recording, but that's its charm - the pressing really brings out the presence. And it's a gatefold with lyrics, to boot.
Hi,Have you heard the Dutch CBS 6570 pressing of The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle? I stumbled onto one when replacing my defective original and it is excellent. One of the best sounding LPs in my collection. No kidding.
Never have. Would like to, though. CBS semed to have something on the ball back in the day, wherever they were pressing their stuff for the Netherlands market.
Can you point me in the direction of where to purchase Dutch pressings of thre Boss?
Hi,Man, I wish I could. Other than suggesting maybe GEMM. I bought mine used at Joe's Record Paradise in Rockville, MD. I venture over there from Northern VA every so often. I would like to claim that I hunted it down but the truth is that it was just plain good luck. I didn't know about it previously.
The one thing I can tell you, and this has helped me tremendously, is that I record wanted LPs in an EXCEL spreadsheet. Whenever I see a need or read here about some LP which looks like it would make a good addition, I just add it to my spreadsheet. I look it up in Goldmine to see which pressings might be earlier than others. I have my collection catalogued as well. This of course also helps eliminate the purchase of records I already have. The spreadsheet works great but is quite a chore to set-up, but now that I have it I wish I had done it many years ago. VERY useful.
