Greetings- I was considering upgrading the power supply in my newly acquired Sondek with a Valhalla board and 50hz DC motor. However, I keep reading that the stock motor is a bit flimsy. Are there any high quality (Maxon, Pabst, etc) 50 hz dc motors that would work well with the Valhala board without too much trouble installing? Thanks very much, wpod
Follow Ups:
I have tried various cd motor "upgrades" for the LP-12 and haven't liked any of them. Most seemed a bit too, one note bass.
All Linn powers supplies except the Basik output a 50hz signal no matter what it is fed with so will require a 50hz motor. Measure the diameter of the motor pulley, 17mm = 60hz, 21mm = 50hz.
Linn motors are quite bullet proof, the newer ones are slightly better sounding due to an improved thrust bearing.
Most valhallas are 10+ years old now, it is recommended they are serviced every 10-12 years.
The Hercules is an excellent alternative, it is 33rpm and 45rpm, works on 110 or 240 volts and first class build quality, and so far 100% reliable. This also requires a 50hz motor though.
oops, should have said dc motor upgrades... late night here in England....
Hey:I would strongly consider the Hercules upgrade over the stock Valhalla. It offers 33 and 45 rpm at the push of the power switch and is only $280 USD (150GBP) from www.hifi-repairs.com and the 50 Hz motor is about (81.90GBP).
Darran at Hi-Fi repairs is getting the order together for me.
There are other Linn solutions that use DC motors and also a few other options than the Lingo.
Personally I find the Lingo overpriced. I would rather take the difference a buy a better cartridge.
