Every once in a while I get a chance to show off my number one passion to someone close in my life.Tonight I had my Cousin and her husband to dinner at Chez Tube'. Yes I cook and I am damn good at it. When they arrived I was spinning an LP of Duran Duran on my CLD Plinth project number two. It was somewhat medium volume.
Their son has cut a demo CD and Jeannie gave me a copy a couple of months ago to keep. It took me the full side of the album to find the critter. So we dropped it in the multiplayer for a listen.
Chris, their youngest son is a bonified Grunge guy, and being a grunge lover I cranked up my stereo to about 90 db and played the album straight through.
Most people never get to hear a high resolution stereo system properly set up and belting out the tunes. They might hear a loud PA style system at a club or something concocted up to be the hells bells in home theater. I would say 80% of the normal folk around the world never hear an outstanding stereo system.
They sat listening with tears in their eyes hearing stuff they never knew existed on the CD. They have their car stereos, they have their computer stereos, they have their walkmans and home compact stereo but tonight they heard Chris's stuff as he had laid it down on the tracks.
And the tears welled up.
It made my whole tortuous journey through audio a complete and total success. Enjoying some great tunes with family, drinking a few beers and commenting on Chris's CD...this was definitely a tubesforever evening!

I know it can get confusing, but the grunge kids with tears in their eyes are called "Emo" these days. I think it is because the comedian of the same name brought tears of pain after a few minutes one of his performances.Cody
["Enjoying some great tunes with family, drinking a few beers and commenting on Chris's CD...this was definitely a tubesforever evening!"]Just a few beers? Did they also laugh a lot? I vaguely remember similar behavior in my younger days. I think they're holding out on you.

I looked at that graph and laughed....The actual tracing on a 1khz or 10khz sign wave would be infinitely better than a power amplifiers being able to trace the sign wave. And infinitely better than a cartridges transcription of the same sign wave....I am so tired of digital bashing I could just puke! I love music, some is good some is bad and some is ugly and the media has nothing to do with the music, it was the mastering and production that distinguishes good from aweful sound.
The CD was mastered professionally and Chris's CD sounded great if you are into Grunge.
Tonight I am going to spin some classical to rinse out that grungy aftertaste. A little grunge goes a long way!
they were actually crying?
even the grunge guy?i had an uncle who used to fake a crying jag at funerals. it was a running gag at every funeral he would do it. i loved it.
did they cry when you put the CD on?
What you described can be said for all over the globe. This documents the decadence in evolution of man... promoted by sales / marketing departments of the big industry!
Not good sounding equipment is questioned, only cheap reproducable equipment - and worse sounding by data reduction like MP3 etc. It's our challange to mswim against the mainstream and wrong information.

Good on ya Tubes!
I find people and music are very personal issues. You've caught there attention and this music was important to them,to the point were they listened with intensity and with emotion. My point being the majority of folks hear music as background only.
My oldest son (13) is a bass player.Plays in the highschool band and we put him in a kids rock band program. There are 10 3hour practice sessions, there are two guitar players, drummer and him on bass. After they get 4 or 5 songs together there's a concert with all the other kids bands, and then they go to a recording studio to cut a cd.Really cool gig!.
My son digs Led Zepplin and asked if I would put some on last weekend,so we sat on the couch and I cranked up Zep 2 (Queix 200g reissue).I looked over at him as he did air bass guitar to the Lemon song, and I dam near had a tear in my eye!.
So ya Tubes I know what ya mean.I just wish everyone got it.
Cheers,Rob.
Why the stereo retail stores do not display really great sounding rigs in say 1k, 2k, 3k and 5k packages. Where you could plunk down some green and take home the real deal.People end up with a mish mash of stuff that may or may not congeal into a great system.
I did not even treat them to my favorites tonight....just let them enjoy their son making some jammin down tunes!
