Forget the clearcoat. It will look hack no matter what you do.
There is usually a chrome plater in every city. Look in your yellow pages under Plating.
Triple chrome plate is hard to beat and not that expensive.

Zinc has special plating requirements.
If the zinc alloy is clean copper plate will stick to it quite well. For indoor use copper plate might be all you need.
Anodizing (Hard Anodizing better) is also a possible option. Check with the anodizing about the zinc though.
