I picked up ~50 lps, mostly jazz, swing and big band. Many were on labels I am unfamiliar with such as Fanfare, Emus, hindsight, Ace of Hearts, bluebird (rca reissue label). Many of the recordings were of radio broadcasts supposedly never before issued on vinyl. I haven't cleaned any of them yet to listen and form my own opinions. But, in general are these smaller labels poor pressings of material refused by the big labels, unknown stuff of poor quality and hence not on the big labels, or are some of these labels consistently of good quality both musically and sonically? Thanks for any information. Norm
Follow Ups:
I have a Benny Goodman double LP on RCA/Bluebird that is a reissue of recordings from 1936. Considering the age of the source material, I had very low expectations, but was surprised at how dynamic and lifelike the recording was. Nice quiet vinyl too.
Can't speak to the others, but Emus seems to be mostly material originally issued on the Roulette label, including people such as Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Joe Williams, maynard ferguson, etc. I've found a variation among pressings, some pretty close to the originals (Which often were very good.), others not so hot. The founder of Roulette, Morris Levy (Think I've got that right, at least the last name.) was alleged to have some, shall we say, questionable business associates and got into enough legal trouble to spend some time in jail. If I remember correctly-and I might not-Emus was a way to dodge the legal actions the government had taken against Levy and his business enterprises.
I have LP's on Emus & Bluebird and they sound pretty good.
