While I haven't posted here in along time I still browse the forum occassionlly and still collect and listen to vinal. I've nothing of real importance to say, but today was my day for the gods of collecting smile on me and I've just got to tell someone who appreciates vinal. The wife and I went to a garage sale early and found approximatley 400 records lined up on a shelf, .50 each, a mix of classical (mostly), pop, and a little jazz. I picked out 47 that looked especially tempting and went home. After checking through them and finding them all in far better shape than the appeared on cursory inspection at the sale, I went back about 1:00 PM to pick up a few more. Surprisingly almost all the classical was still there. I picked out about thirty more, went to pay and was told to just take them home. In fact, take as many as I wanted. I added 145 records to my collection today for $23.50, only two or three are duplicates and each is in better condition than what I alreay have. I don't know whether to be more excited about Glen Gould's 'Goldberg Variations' (the second version) or Duke Ellington's 'The World of Duke Ellington' or . . . Ahhhhh, it's a great day.
Follow Ups:
They feel better giving the records to someone they know will enjoy them!
It does and they do. People seem to be reluctant to throw vinal away even if they have no turntable themselves, and hope that it goes to a good home. One gentleman in particular spent several minutes reminicing about the hours his mother spent listening to a couple records I bought and ended with sincere hopes that I would enjoy them as much as she had.
And I am glad they do not just throw them out. I am picking up nearly entire collections some in NM or at least VG+ for a buck each at the thrift stores. Just thinking someone would toss these makes me sick to my stomache. It takes so little time and money to build a great turntable from used parts, and even the electronics to do vinyl is reasonably priced that I would much rather spend my 2-5k over 5 years on used LPs and phono upgrades than plow it into CD's which will be replaced sooner or later with a new media upgrade/downgrade/or side step.
I do handyman work and was asked to meet a woman at a house she was in the process of buying, to give her a quote in some work that she wanted done before she moved in.The original occupant was a woman in her 80's that passed away, and her son was selling the house and most of it's contents. It turns out the woman was a music teacher, and in one of the rooms was four crates of records. I bought the entire collection (170 LPs) for $17.00. Most of it is classical, with many very old box sets in pristine condition. Also some very eclectic music in the mix.
This was about 3 weeks ago, and I didn't even own a turntable at the time. I received my new MMF-7 yesterday, and borrowed a phono pre from a friend until my Bottlehead Seduction kit arrives.
I played my first record tonight, and was all smiles!
records if you hadn't showed up. A dumpster might have been their fate. Congratulations on a great find.
For so little money, can one find more pleasure than used vinyl? I can recall spending $10 on 25 LP's at Goodwill and being ecstatic--Stravinsky, Heifetz, Mahler, Price.... For the same $10 nothing else gives me such pleasure. And to beat it all, the LP's will last long enough to give to my kids when I've gone who will give it back to Goodwill and start the cycle all over again.
Nope. As I have pointed out to anyone who will listen the dollars saved buying used vinal over CD's has paid for my turntable many times over. Not only that, there is the joy of the hunt. I've been looking for the Goldberg Variations for some time now. What a kick to finally find it, and in good condition.
