Any opinions on my choices here? I have had good experiences in the past with the old Glider (like its great tracking ability, smooth and somewhat romantic tonal balance) but the Lyria carts all seem tremendous bang for the buck. Cart will be going into a Well Tempered Super table and my phono stage can handle pretty much any cartridge.I am looking for a well balanced cartridge to match to a SET/horn type system. Lots of the vinyl I own is less than pristine so excellent tracking and tolerance of groove noise are a plus.

Lyra do offer good value.... and you can sometimes get great deals. But I have heard more than a few people talk about them needing better than average vinyl to get to there best. I run an Argo and, so far, it has tracked nearly all of my old stuff with only a few problems but its not as good a tracker as others I have owned on poor pressings. But when its good.... boy is it good.
Worth trying to get a listen to the Dorian if you can, I went to buy one but got a great deal on the Argo.Have fun,
If you have the original Argo, the Dorian will track better. The Dorian was designed after the original Argo and included some improvements over the Argo. The Argo-i is when these improvements were incorporated into the Argo, and as a result, the Argo-i both tracks better and sounds better than the Argo. The Dorian has a more relaxed sound than the Argo (the Dorian is more in the mold of the Helikon), while the Argo is more upfront and has sharper dynamics and tighter rhythms.
I find that both the Dorian and Argo-i track better in a top-quality tonearm. With tonearms like Triplanar, Schroeder, Graham, Immedia, Moerch et al, I can play almost anything, which includes lots of preowned LPs (cleaned on a VPI) and heavily-cut 12-inch 45rpm remixes.
It is an original rather than an 'i' version. But it was purchased well after the Dorian was out so it was not the earliest one. It's not that it tracks badly but sometimes it feels a bit uneasy on bad vinyl. It is much improved now that it is clamped down with a SME V, that made a vaste improvement in all its abilitys.
I spend quite alot of time with a friends Koetsu Rosewood and that seems to float over any old crap you put under it and make it shine... but my Argo does have a stronger presentation and rhythms.Perhaps I should go for a Skala when I have the cash.....
It never ends.
