Denon recommends greater than 1000ohms or 1000 and upwards. It is not a very exact recommendation and in fact due to the very high output of this MC cartridge, 3mV, it is often used with a MM input, IE 47K.Firstly the 3mV output may be way too high for your MC input. have you considered that this may not work with your MC input without causing severe overload?
Secondly the load impedance will effect the output voltage. At a load of 1000ohms the output will fall to 2.4mV. At 240 ohms the out will be halved, IE 1.5mV.
It may in fact sound better with a load under 1000 ohms with a subsequent lowering of the output voltage but you probably have gain to burn with the MC input.
If by "under loading" you mean the 400ohm load it cannot be rasied without actually removing resistance inside the preamp. The cartridge output with a 400ohm load will be 1.87mV.

"Firstly the 3mV output may be way too high for your MC input. have you considered that this may not work with your MC input without causing severe overload?"Meant to ask: what are the characterists of "overload"? Thanks again.
Thanks, Garth. Available gain is 50-65dB in 5dB steps. And yes, you're correct, I've got ample gain available. [Phono pre is Manley Steelhead, BTW.]
on the 50dB setting the output to your line preamp will be:592mV
That is kinda high but not too bad, I don't think there will be an overload situation.
I also saw there is a 200ohm setting. Don't laugh but you should try that too. I use my DL-103 as less than the 40ohm DC resistance.
At 200ohm the total output to the linestage will be:
430mV
You may actually like the control and speed with a low load impedance- It can't hurt to try, it's only a flick of a switch, no?
Good luck.
Please report back if you try these settings, I think you may be surprised.
I only just set the arm/cartridge up this afternoon [I've long wanted a dedicated mono arm], but at this stage I can't say I dislike what I'm hearing loaded at 400 ohms. And in fact, I don't hear much difference [if any at all] using the MM inputs [although output is louder]. But it's only been a couple of hours--I'll post again within the next couple of days with additional thoughts. I'm of course curious to determine if there's any distortion at 400 ohm loading. And you're right re loading, just a flick of a knob is all it takes. Easy enough to fiddle around with. Thanks.
