is spending on upgrades enough, thats it ,sounds fine to me,no more spending unless I win the lottery?Since starting work a good few years ago,I've always purchased seperates and merrily p/ex,upgraded when funds allowed.
My vinyl system at present,T/T,Arm,Cart,pre/power/phono stage, speakers, leads consist of ex dem,nos and one or two current price items. To my ears its sounds bloody wonderful.
New price approx £9,000 GBP,price I paid approx £6,000,minus what I recieved for my old gear.Bear in mind this has taken many years of upgrading. No more upgrades for me, for the foreseable future.(famous last words)
How many others have decided enough is enough?(again famous last words)
Follow Ups:
...Cartridge swaps and some tube rolling aside, I am totally satisfied with my system. It's posted and I have $5000 or so into it.
It's all been purchased used save for some of the cables, tubes and carts.
In the past year I demo-ed some pricey stuff and took it back within days...Why keep it if I am happy with what I have.
Component isolation, speaker position and room tweeks will keep me tinkering for YEARS!

We're talking connoisseurship here, not basic survival needs. We get urges. Itches that must be scratched. Genes that scream to be expressed. We can't help ourselves--it's not our fault.Personally, I can't see myself spending the $25k my system would cost retail, but then I didn't have to. The downside is that I'm spoiled forever; the upside is that I could be deleriously happy for the rest of my life with what I have now.
I have a modest, vintage based system. With 3 kids still at home, the Bellari I purchased was a big expense!
CAFC,It's gone well past price-point sensitivity...
From my perspective, my music system has been a work in progress for the past twenty five plus years. Understand, for some of us poor souls, this is an addiction for life...
I evaluate my system spend in terms of 'years of disposable earnings expensed' and the attendant opportunity cost. Also, I accept that the open market value of my system is next to worthless -you would be very hard pressed to get £20 per box in the local boozer.
Back to your question, for those hardcore indivduals, once opportunity cost issues have been abandoned, then price-point seriously exceeds any class A addiction.
Happy hols.
This depends on your ears of course. I can listen to a carefully chosen 80 euro fleamarket system and enjoy the music with a good slab of vinyl. I just took my ca. 1979 Denon amp from the attic, let it warm up, i was amazed at the sound, lush, no harshness whatsoever, good phono preamps: 1x MC and 2x MM! Those were the days!
"The torture never stops"
static (pun intended?) and has been for about a year. I like it and I have no reason to upgrade (unless, like you said, I hit the lottery!).I am enjoying a Denon 103 that I just got used... Two headshells, two carts; works for me...
Price point is not the criterian for the decision, and to be honest, I would have to say that it is my deteriorating hearing that is the bottleneck in my system! I am considering buying a headphone amp that can be modded to include a balance control to correct for sensitivity differences in my ears. I wouldn't call this a system change, or tweak, just a refinement.
Of course, if I were to hit the lottery, all bets are off! I heard a wonderful system at a "hoity, toity HI-FI store in the San Jose, CA area that I would love to shoot for, but then again, that would also mean a NEW HOUSE WITH A DEDICATED LISTENING ROOM FOR JUST VINYL! Wahoooo! Oops, forgot to buy that ticket again! Math teachers just suffer when it comes to buying lottery tickets because they understand probability ;2)

My vinyl system is very meager compared to many here, and I am not saying it is my end all system, but I am happy with where I currently am. I like to rummage thru stuff, looking for audio bargins and my analog hardware is the weak link in my system, but I never know when I will stumble across my next upgrade. This year has been very good for finding some incredible bargins. So, I guess what I am saying is I am currently happy and feel blessed with what I have, but am always looking for a possible upgrade.
After a couple of years of hanging out here I finally got around to listing my system in my profile. I would also like to take this time to thank anumber1 for his help this last year. He is truly a great person and this hobby is lucky to have him be a part of it. Thanks Alan!
Oh stop it (blush)...I am glad you dig what ya got Steve!
From one "bottom feeder" to another; We know the satisfaction isn't in how much you paid for it but how much you ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE!

After college I started out fresh because I sold every piece of audio I had prior to going away.
So in 1983 I started out with a modest Audio Linear/Black Widow/Adcom XCoil/Advent Receiver (highly modified) set-up 20+ years ago. For the following 15 years or so, I modified and upgraded the heck out of the Audio Linear until reaching the equivalent of a VPI 19 MK IV. The BW I was happy to toss the moment I had the opportunity to get a great deal on an EPA-500 (4 wands, guage, and MC cart) and have had it ever since.
The total spend on all that was truly minimal at about $700 or so.
In those years I went through a laundry list of cartridges including some real classics such as Accuphase AC-1, AC-2, Dynavector Ruby, several Adcoms, Benz Glider, Benz H20...Preamps in those times included the Advent, Audible Illusions Mini Mite, CJ PV-10, Audible Illusions Mod 3,3A, and 3A++, and finally the Melos Reference 333 and Phono.
My hot-rodded 19 finally went bye bye only recently about 5 years ago when a local dealer offered me a TNT Jr. demo for a blow-out price.
The change from the home grown to the TNT Jr. was in many aspects minimal, but was still an improvement.I have since spent way too much money (about $1100) adding the flywheel, SDS, Tri-Pulley (now gone) to the Jr. I'm ecstatic with the sound I'm getting, but I feel that it is way too much investment for great vinyl playback.
Having an awesome reference like my current set-up, it's now an ideal time to get back to the basics and a new DIY project.
I am now back in serious DIY mode and am embarking on another turntable project that I hope will allow me to get rid of the TNT and all of its associated expensive hardware. I would much rather have the money invested in music than in a fancy overpriced platter, bearing, and motor. So I am now back to square one. This is such a fun hobby :-)
cheers,
Send an instant karma to me...

I paid about $18K.I don't agree that the differences after this are small, I'm just not in a position to put another $10K in at this time.
I would still like to pick up better speaker cables, and get a Dorian mono and an extra Graham armwand. But that's not real spending.
After several years of constant changes/upgrades to my system, it has been fairly stable for a couple of years now.
It is really easy for me to get sidetracked on tweaking. The whole point of the Hifi if to listen to music. When I go off on a tweak I'm listening to the system and not the music. I've gotten everything to a point where I just listen to music again and want to keep it that way.Still, there are a couple of changes I intend to make as funds allow.
The bottleneck in my System is the phono stage and I plan to have Cyrus Brenneman build me one of his custom Tube stages in the near future. I also plan to have Cy modify my 300B amps.
Beyond that I really want to rebuild my SOTA star TT with a new plinth and subchassis that will allow for mounting multiple arms. I want to have a dedicated mono arm but I only want 1 TT and I like the Vacuum platter so I'm going to have to build such an animal for myself one of these days.
In a way I dread making any changes though, because I do get easily sidetracked into tweak mode...

Hi,Not sure about the pricepoint. What I found is this. The higher i.e. more expensive you go the smaller is the improvement to the previous upgrade.
When I upgraded from a Rega P25 RB600 to a Michell Orbe SE Technoarm A the difference was huge. From Orbe to SME20/2A Series V it was noticable but not as dramatic as the previous one.
Through the whole of my system I found exactley that. However the quest never ends. The exciting part is to find a piece of equipment that is great and not overpriced. Anyone can make expensive gear.
I am very happy with my rig for now and can't see any major upgrade on the horizion.Merry Christmas to all and thank you to all who have chipped in to my questions.

Henry, after stating all that,if funds allow after the festive season, will probably shell out £300 GBP on a MF X-10v3 tube buffer, lol.
