I love Mahler symphonies, but have been somewhat disappointed with the random records I've picked up.. either the performance isn't to my taste (when you feel like the conductor/orchestra just doesn't "get it") or the sonics are poor / uninvolving.

... but if you search the Archives you'll notice that's a subject I've already ranted about more than enough.
Instead, you might do a lot worse than visiting this link. I don't necessarily agree with the author's opinions for each and every symphony or conductor (but then again, whenever does that happen?), but he has listened to very many more performances of those 9.5+1 symphonies than I, and dare I say in all likelihood other Inmates, have.
If you like opinionated recommendations, he also has the same for Beethoven symphonies.
The Solti analog cycle from the early 60s on London/Decca combines good performances with good sound quality. They are pretty easy to find and are inexpensive.I'm partial to Bernstein's performances, but the sound qaulity of his early CBS cycle is atrocious, which is a big let-down for Mahler's large-scale orchestral works. His later cycle on DG are better in terms of performance and sound quality, although I still prefer the warmer, analog sound of Solti's cycle. Bernstein's DG Mahler will cost more too when you're able to find them.
of the 1st and 4th symphonies recorded in 1961. I forgot I had this set. It is from Germany, and all the liner notes are German. I don't know how the German Decca pressings line up in the hierarchy of sound, but these sound pretty good.Unfortunately, I don't read German.

i prefer 2,3,5,6,7,9,10.solti is a badass though....
however as someone else commented above, i am pretty familar with these recordings so i find them to be a good test of the full sound spectrum.
i sent you an email from my work account, let me know if you got it.
prefer the others. However, as I was looking through them based on your recommendation, I discovered this German Decca Solti set and didn't even remember owning it, so I had to listen to it.I did get the email on the Sony turntable. I appreciate the information, and have sent them an email. I responded to your work email address - hopefully that is ok.
Thanks,
i have that happen all the time.sending to the work email is fine, i just won't get it till tomorrow.
granted there are lots of opinions on this and i could understand someone disagreeing with me, but i think the bernstein recordings are always fun to listen to, i really like his 3,8 and adagio from 10.i have not heard any of the DG bernstein on vinyl, although i generally like those performances better.
solti is also pretty solid and i have liked some of the kubelik recordings i have heard.
i also like the karjan recordings on DG, i just picked up a 9 thats sounds great.also the bruno walter recordings but the sonics are not as good as the later recordings.
