I'm in the mist of fine tuning a recently acquired Aries-2 / JMW-10 and need some help with fine tuning the bass.I've tried the Sumiko Blackbird, Ortofon MC-30 and Rega Exact cartridges with a GSP Era Gold MkV phono stage and find all sound a little dull in the lower registers… which to me indicates I’ve a common problem. I think I'm lacking mid bass, and the lower bass is somewhat like hitting a pillow more than plucking a string! I don’t seem to get much improvement playing with the VTA, VTF, azimuth or overhang regardless of cart used. I'm using a 6 inch sand box, with a 32mm floating MDF board & everything is level. I'm using only 3 drops of oil beyond no oil being in contact in the arms dampening.
No matter what I try, I don’t seem to be able to make any sort of change in the bass response to achieve my goal. Has anyone had this problem and found an adjustment which finally gave them the bass they were looking for?

he recommended the Sumiko (which you have tried) and the Dynevector (can't recall the model). Write him.Respect,

Art Dudley's November "Listening" has a uses the word balloon to describe the sound of bass from an SET. He meant it as a description of the downside of this kind of amplification (he also praises their other qualities). What kind of amp are you using? How do you know it's the Aries 2 and not your amp?
So, is this a change from what you had previously?I have the Aries 2 w/12.5 and my bass is tight, though of course not very deep on MMG's, and I keep the volume low on my subwoofer to minimize blend issues. This is with a Denon 103R on a decent, weighted, stand.
What arm to you have on your Aries and is it really a step up from the HW-19. I have an HW-19 III with a Morch UP-4 Percission arm.
I am using a 1 3/4" maple butcher block with my Aries 2.When I had the JMW10 on it the bass was awesome with my Benz cartridges, but I felt it was a tad bloated.
I now have a Phantom mounted on it and the bass is real solid and tighter with no bloat.
I found out the surface the table is sitting on is very critical. I had a TT sitting on the birch butcher blok on an Ikea Bekvam and it sounded really bad. Hard, constrained and cold.
I threw the maple up there on top of the Bekvam under the TT and it really came alive.
No doubt, the Aires bass is a bit soft but extended. I have a original Aires w/jmw 10 AT oc9/bent audio Mu /Cat Ultimate preamp. I have lived with this rig for a while and it seems like every change I make (tubes , ic, pc, cart.,) I have to live with bass problems that last a while. I can't say if it is all in my head or actual. But, I did add a Neuance isolation platform and I haven't had that problem since.( Just about 6 months though) I'm planning on getting a Shelter 901 to balance out that warmth. My analog guru Brian Hartsell from the analog room here in San Jose has suggested that and also the Helicon SL as a good balance to the warmth of the Aires. It IS the sonic signature of that table though and imho, for all the other great things this table does, I can live with it until I have a spare 10-20 grand around for a Brinkman balance or SME 20/30 which from what i have heard personally, will make a significant upgrade. BYW, CJ Premier 140, Mag. 1.6qr, VH silver, Airsine,Jaden sig. speaker cable, Purist Venustra phono cable rounds out the analog rig.
