Can anyone ID this turntable? I picked it up for what I thought was a reasonable price. The badge on the front says Oink!. I think it looks like an AR table. It has a Mission 774 LC arm. There is quite a lot of bearing play though. Anyone know how to repair this arm?
Follow Ups:
for an independent music publication. The letters look the same and the fanzine of the same name uses an exclamation point, aslo. Every issue I've seen comes with an enclosed 7" with a few bands each side. This may not be the same Oink!, but it makes sense that it could be.
It might be easier/more economical to ditch the arm and replace it with a used RB250.
I'm thinking it's a Rega or one of it's many variations on the same theme.
That Mission 774LC arm is an economy version of the 774's but very nice nonetheless, have you looked closely at the pivot area
with gimballed bearing designs there are normally very small cover plates with 2 small holes that cap the bearing assemblies with a snap ring pliers you can unscrew those caps and carefully jar the bearings and associated running gear out (note the order) loose and out clean them up examine them carefully with a magnifying glass and by feel look of deformation (flat spots etc) and if they're clean and concentric then re-insert the bearing followed by
whatever other stuff and then adjust the tension very carefully a scoshe at a time until there is as little play as possible and the movement is as free and unimpeeded as possible. If that sounds a mite too involved. you can always send it out
for re-wiring and a tune up/check out.
...It's an Oak audio 'The Oak' turntable from the mid-80's (the red drive belt gives it away). From what I remember, they were pretty good - it competed in the Systemdek/Rega 3 part of the market, but didn't get much of a toehold as it wasn't quite so well reviewed - they didn't make many, so it is indeed a very good find! I heard one at the time and liked it, but I can't help with the bearing ;o)
Love to all,
Andy.
I agree, i bought one of these from 'Cash Converters'(UK used goods store) a good few years ago. It didn't have a matt though, just the grey platter. Anyway the arm on it, which i'm guessing was the same, had some play, side to side. I didn't keep it because the belt slipped off when i switched to 45rpm, and i couldn't see how i could get a replacement. I remember it sounding good.
As for Oink, is that an actual company/Hi-Fi name? Possibly it was badged as such in your country. The deck i had was unbadged. For the arm, try a search for Mission bearing play, or a post on that subject.

Does a Rega have the same mounting postion as the Mission arm, i'm not sure it does.
