As my Dyna 10X Gold hi ouput ages, it sounds better with lower VTA. What's up with this?It sounded good a year ago at a particular height but no longer sounds good there. Did my ears change? Certainly, they have, I suppose. After all, there's photographic evidence that argues my hair and arms--but on the hair ON my arms--are thinner. Maybe the little hairs in my ears, the ones that conduct sound, are thinner, too?
; )
Hell, I don't know. All I know is that I had to drop the VTA lower than I ever had it, by a millimeter or two, to get the well-worn Dyna to sound better than CD again.
A grasp at a straw: Perhaps as a stylus ages, it makes icky in the upper mids sooner than other frequencies? And by lowering the arm's base, I de-emphasize that band and help to cover the grainy tracks by emphasizing the lower registers more?
Follow Ups:
Funny,, I had to raise the VTA about 1mm on my Dynavector Karat the other day. When CD's sound better than the vinyl, I look for a reason. VTA change worked wonder and the life is back in the system.
The Karat is almost two years old and probably has about 750-800 hours on it. Still sounds great
If the stylus is worn to the degree that it's sounding very different
seriously lost it's edge, it likely is way past the time it should have been replaced.
Moving coil cart's suspensions do age. Some become softer, body riding lower, requiring a lightening of vtf. Others will stiffen, requiring an increase in vtf. Just part of the wonderful world of analog.
And the dynamic swings and bass came back.
Kind of reminds me of sport motorcycle suspensions, if you are fussy about such things you will tweak compression and rebound damping till you get it just right on a new bike. Typically one to six months later, you will notice that the bike feels a bit mushy and will increase both.
was change the viscosity in the front forks, or slightly alter the quantity of oil. Rears, just aftermarket swap for disposable stock. And if you really wanted to get fancy, replace the plastic bushings in the swingarm with brass. You bought everything, nothing came stock. Rear set controls, low bars, fairing, solo seat, aluminum wheels, air filters, fenders, exhaust. Kids today just go to the dealer ..... and ride away with a hyperbike with toggle throttle. Where's the fun in that :-)
