In Reply to: Stylast and Last Stylus Cleaner - OC9ML/II posted by slate1 on August 4, 2005 at 13:15:37:
However, I use Stylast religiously before each side of every record I play. I have been doing this for over 20-years with excellent results. I have used it on my original OC9 and I use it on my current OC9ML/II. I have never had any problems—only a pristinely clean stylus for more than 20-years.
Follow Ups:
I liked using it, felt safe that my stylus/cantilever wouldn't go flying across the room, but we (2 other friends used it too) saw that green gunk and stopped using it. I'd read that other people had found the same problem. Were we somehow applying too much or do you use some method to control the build-up? Perhaps "occasional" use was the culprit; is it self cleaning?I picked up about 5 bottles of the stuff when an electronics store stopped selling tt's! I figured $1 each was a pretty good price...does the stuff go bad if kept tightly closed?
I don’t know what to tell you, Mike. I’ve been using Stylast for years and it works perfectly for me. I’ve never observed any sort of residue on my styli and cantilevers. Presently, I’m on my fifth or sixth bottle in about 20-years. I tighten the caps when not in use and they seem to last a long time. I have not looked at my present OC9ML/II under a microscope since its been mounted, but I looked at my previous OC9 after five years of use and it looked beautiful—no residue that I could see. I also looked at my Ortofon MC-2000 after 11-years of use and I observed no residue there, either.Sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.
I have used Stylast since 1979 and have never had a problem.
No buildup or goo.
Same here. I do apply it sparingly, however. My first bottle lasted 8-9 years. I'm only on my second bottle now. I guess it could be possible to overdo it.

I just finished my third bottle in about 15 years, maybe longer.
I guess the key is to use it sparingly but often. Here's a link to a previous post about my recently sold Benz.
cheers,

Thanks John - just the info I was looking for.Do you use anything else for stylus care or just the Stylast?
I use only Stylast. I’ve never found a need to use any kind of cleaner. Stylast will keep your stylus totally clean without any auxiliary help.
I originally had this mounted up on a P25 and running through a Musical Fidelity A300's phono section and HATED the sound - WAY bright and no bass. You and I discussed the loading issue and I never could get a straight answer from Musical Fidelity concerning what the MC section of the A300 was loading the OC9 at even though it stated 100ohm in the user manual. I took it off and put it on the shelf where it has sat for the last year.
I recently helped a friend set up a system and he had purchased an OC9 to run through a CI-Audio phono stage. I was sceptical, but holy crap it sounded good!
I was so impressed that today I retrieved my shelved OC9 and mounted it up on my Michell TecnoDec and ran it through my Dynavector P-75 (loaded at 100ohm with 63db gain) and I've got to say it sounds damned good! Top end is a little forward, but not bright, and the bass is there in spades.
The A300 was obviously loading the MC section with something other than 100ohms.
Anyhow - glad I gave the OC9 a second chance, it'll staying on my table for a while.
John,What is your technique of applying Stylast?
I use the brush that is attached to the bottle top to dab the stylus.
I am on my second bottle in about 10 years,

I use both brushes that come with the bottle. I first use the stiff bristle brush to clean the stylus. Then I apply Stylast liberally to the cantilever and stylus with the brush in the bottle top so that there is a blob of Stylast hanging from the stylus. After the side is finished playing I brush the stylus again with the stiff bristle brush and I clean that brush with a spray can of compressed air. I go through a bottle of Stylast about every 4 or 5 years.
Been doing it for 15 years with excellent results.

...Am also a convert to Stylast, having read the archives and also encouraged by the experience of John Elison and others here.I Use the cleaner once a week, and the preservative before each LP side is played. My record deck is always fed well washed & vac'd, anti-stat'd & dry brushed LP's. It is the vinyl experience...
And sometimes I have to giggle (as I also recall a distant memory sadly too long ago now, as a rebellious schoolboy surrepticiously taking aim and firing rubber band caterpalted paper pellets at the angelic choirboys... to liven up Sunday service and then seeing one of our number dragged out of church by his ear...) as I reverently walk up to my record deck - which sits upon its raised dedicated stand at the far end of the listening room and I kneel down before it and apply the Stylast to the cantilever and diamond... ahhh the ritual of it!
I'm sure there is an obsessive/compulsive lurking somewhere in all of us...
Enjoy
I now use the RRL Stylus Cleaner in lieu of the LAST cleaner, but have always used Stylast and will continue applying it right before stylus hits vinyl... each and every time.cheers,
Ray
