Anyone had any dealings with the Technics SU-9070 phono stage? Is it any better than what's stuffed in the back of my Sansui 9090db? I am using a Sansui SR-838 with a silver wired tonearm. I use an Ortofon VMS 20MkII most of the time. I appreciate any thoughts.Happy listening

The SU-9070 was not a phono stage it was a full function preamp. While not an R&B Series device, it had great specs for its day. It had a clean, low distortion, wide bandwidth, phono stage that was head and shoulders better than what was found in the 9090DB receiver. Don;t get me wrong, the 9090DB was a great receiver and I sold lots of them back in the day, but it was more famous for it's amplifier and tuner performance than its preamp.FYI, I have an SU-300MC head amp and I keep it around in case I need the additional gain some day. The phono in the 9070 is similar in quality.
Also, I don't know if you are thinking of buying either of these, or if you have access to them, but bear in mind that these units are quite old and mass produced consumer products. They were from a time prior to the great leaps in sound quality that occurred with respect to phono stages. I would venture to say that any current low priced quality phono stage of similar specs will likely sound better due to the greater attention to parts quality and power supply quality.
I hope this helped.
cheers,
Ray
PS. I need it to work with both MM and MC carts as I am looking very hard at going MC. Thanks again
Thanks for your reply. Can you offer a clue as to a descent phono stage that would suit my needs. I am not interested in low priced junk but not quite up to needing a Dino or anything thing that high on the ladder yet. I want to "free" my turntable up as much as I can while I get my AU-20K Sansui repaired, Then I'll probably jump up to the Dino caliber. I appreciate all your help.Happy listening
Exactly what price range are we talking about?
I could maybe do in the 1 to 2 hundred dollar range. I am having to step down spending a bit on my bedroom unit, namely the 9090db because I am needing to get one of my main listening room amps, a Sansui AU-20k repaired. I maybe could do a bit more if one of those elusive "hellofa" deals popped up in my face.
Happy listening
Not sure if any change will be worth your while for under $200.
