I really love this albums songs. I first purchased it used on a japanese cd seven or eight years ago. The sound was thin tinny and compressed as most of the 80's cd's seem to sound. I collected cds for the last 15 years and have just discoverd vinyl in the last 6 months, so now I am in the process of upgrading my favorite discs to vinyl! This is especially expensive since I am continually dicovering new music to buy as I go to replace the CDs I already own. So anyway, about a month ago I picked it up on vinyl thinking that I would finally hear this puppy in all its splendor- the way it was meant to be heard- Yadda Yadda Yadda. When I got it home it sounda about the same as the CD. Was it just a bad Master?
If any of you have recomendations on a particular pressing to seek I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Fella's
Follow Ups:
There's a big divide in good-sounding ones and distant, thin, horrible ones.I recall that when I lost my orig in a fire I went out and bought a replacement, maybe two yrs after orig release and was very dissappointed.
Can't help on matrix #'s or similar, but I do recall that the orig had a perforated 'postcard' novelty cover which could actually be removed and mailed if you wanted.
Later versions blew that off....good luck, let us know what you find,
I never cared for the sound of my copy of the vinyl (US pressing, purchased new in the 80s). Too shrill for me.
I got a demo version that sounds pretty good. However, I have a regular 'ol Wild, ... that sounds great.
I seem to come across them fairly often in the thrifts. Not that collectible, but "Lost in the Flood" is dang good. In a month you will own several to compare, at a buck each.
My original purchase (1973) Columbia sounds very good...have it playing thru headphones as I type. Don't know how the cd sounds so can't compare for you, but it sounds tight and involving as we expect vinyl to sound.
Hi,I have this one (Columbia PC 31309) and although I have to admit I haven't listened to it in a while, I cannot recall it sounding less than very good. Maybe you do have a bad pressing. Now on Springsteen's second album “The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle” my original Columbia pressing had all sorts of weird striations or something pressed into the vinyl - almost like it wasn't pressed enough or something. I no longer consider this a part of my collection so don’t have its cat. no. available. Anyway the point is that I found a Dutch pressing that is absolutely KILLER. It's CBS 65780. If you spot one of these, pay the asking price, it is worth it.
My Dutch pressing is S 65480. Haven't played it in a while, Springsteen records are not demonstration material but i remember it being listenable.
Hi,Well my copy is certainly listenable. Seriously, this may be the best sounding LP in my entire collection. I agree that Springsteen's albums don't necessarily sound so good, but that's because he was an early adopter of digital recording. Too bad. It began with "Born to Run," I think. Anyway, I was caught off guard by the truly demonstration quality of the sound of this LP. Who knows, though, maybe it just likes my DENON/RB-250/Clearaudio setup. The V. Wood is a KILLER cartridge for rock.
My copy is Columbia KC 31903 and sounds very good to my ears.
Its spinning now.

My lp also sounds like crap. I don't believe any good vinyl of this album exists.
