Hello,
I've never seen an original copy of this album. I have the original Orange and black label re-issue with the picture of Oliver Nelson on the cover. I also have the reissues as well as the CD. I was just listening to this album on my vpi/Souther/Grado set up and as a reality check compared it to the CD and reissues. No contest. The original had more detail, air, yada yada .. Does anyone have the orginal album with the 'abstract' cover design? If so, how does it compare? Why? I just want to know if the orginal is worth searching for.
Regards,
David
Follow Ups:
i have five copies including the one you mention. It doesnt sound any different than the balck and brown pressing with the other ccover but both sound better than the red ring label pressing. hope this helps.
I have a bunch of copies:Stereo original with the art cover
Mono promo original with a different cover all together.
British HMV with the art cover
The 1996 GRP reissue, which sounds respectable, actuallyMy favorite hands down is the stereo original. It is an incredible recording. I hate Impulse pressings because so many of them are noisy. I got lucky with these, though.
should tell you to get this disc in ANY form asap. just the music alone! DUH! how could one not have this in any respectable jazz collection, original issues or not.then all those jimmy smith and wes montgomery CTIs with O.N.

According to this site the stereo version used a different cover design than the mono? Interesting.
Thanks again for the web link.

There are two types of music- good and bad. Life is too short to bother much with one and hopefully long enough to fully appreciate the other...
I'll ask if there's a sonic difference, but I'm sure he'll laugh at me, cuz he has every issue of every impulse lp ever made, orange label, black and red, promos, you name it. Pretty sick. He has nearly every blue note jazz record too. We are talking floor to ceiling of every wall in 5 or 6 rooms. He's been at it for years.

That has a pic of Nelson. The only *first* B&AT that I know of that has a pic of him on the cover is a double LP reissue that had a quartet group of Oliver's on the other LP. I used to have the orig. B&AT mono, but it died and I got a 180g stereo reissue that looks like your posted pic. Sounds pretty good to me.
Hi,
This is a cover similar to the one I have. The cover shown is a MCA digital remastered copy which I also have and deserves no comment. The Impulse stereo A-5 copy I have includes the same picture but the name Oliver Nelson is in smaller type and is purple in color. The title type is larger in blue/green and the type used for the list of musicians is larger in blue. It's a beautiful cover. I also have the Impulse reissue series version in 180g vinyl. Nice, but it still pales in comparison.

And likewise, have no others to compare to. But its a keeper. Its one of the essentials in any jazz library.
but in Mono - unfortunately, I have nothing else to compare it to.
