Hello my friends: I have a Acoustic Signature Final Tool turntable with a Shelter 501 cartridge and a Origin Silver tonearm; I am considering upgrading to the Shelter 901 cartridge; the prices are $ 850.00 and $ 1.500.00; I would like to know if any of you guys has compared both models ? owned ? auditioned ? your comments and suggestions will be very welcome. Thanks in advance, Best, Antonio Machado.

which is an Hyperspace with ace-space tonearm, and the EAR 834P with Telefunken smoothplate tubes. A good friend lent it to me to see if it is a good partner. My current cart is a VdH Frog. The 901 has better low end than the Frog, and way better upper bass, liquid, airy and room-filling highs, and I've yet to notice that "famous" midrange recession some people talk about. This thing sounds "right" has a lot of drive into the music, it's open, delicate, very detailed and pretty silent. Works well with all kinds of music, be it Deep Purple, classical or hardbop. I like it very much and I'm going to buy one for me, once I try it with another tonearm which my friend lent to me too.I never listened to a 501, so I don't know if the sound I'm enjoying is any better than the 501's, but I rather go for the one I know I like well.

I don't remember the issue number, but Fremer reviewed the whole Shelter line awhile back. I haven't heard both in the same system, but I've heard both and Fremer's findings didn't contridict what I've heard. The 901 does many things better than the 501, but I wouldn't take a loss on a 501 to upgrade. But if my 501 was on it's last legs and I had $1500, I'd certainly consider it.
say "If my 501 was on it's last legs I'd certainly consider it"; well my friend, that is somehow my case: it happens that my beloved four years old grandson decided it was a good idea to play with my Acoustic Signature Final Tool turntable while I was working and he broked the tip, I called Needle Doctor but it can't be re-tiped, so now I am thinking on the possibility of upgrading my cartridge and going for the Shelter 901. Nevertheless the difference in price is considerable, from $ 850.00 to $ 1.500.00, so I have to think about it and listen opinions/experiences/comments just like yours before. Thanks for making time to help me, Best, Antonio Machado.
The 901 was definately stronger and had better definition on the bottom end. The frequency extremes is what really set the 901 apart from the 501. A 901 would be extreme overkill on my table, but I wouldn't hesitate to put one on yours.
