I have the MFSL and the Jap version. The Jap version is more detailed, lean and energetic compared to the MFSL. THe MFSL is tonally more smooth and bloated.
I guess I should pick up an ABC version and see for myself.
Follow Ups:
I have a CD of AJA that's probably mastered by him. It has very bloated bass, so when I saw a couple of descriptions of the MFSL having that quality, I wondered.
Hoffman did not master this LP -- or any MFSL stuff. Also, there have been numerous lengthy threads on the topic of the Hoffman mastered CD -- and the general concensus as near as I can tell (with a few dissenters who feel they have one) is that no one has yet to definitively (i.e. confirmed by Hoffman himself) find a Hoffman mastered Aja.
Lastly, Hoffman has mentioned the MFSL CD as being very good. I don't recall him discussing the MFSL LP, but IMHO this is one of MFSL's low points.
I think I paid $15 for my NM Japanese pressing--rainbow MCA label. No gatefold.Very quiet vinyl, as has been mentioned. I find it a tiny bit on the bright side -- not bad for certain occasions.
Ultimately, it's the first US ABC pressing that I turn to, which to me has the wonderful and unique sound of late '70s, leather sofa rock star coke infused elegant decadence.
..still I remain tied to the mast!
Course there's Tales Of Brave Ulysses ....Okay, I'll stop.
You'll drive up the prices of Japanese LPs :-)
I also have a Jpn pressing of Aja. I would take it over the MFSL, and the vinyl is wonderfully quiet on both. IMHO, however, the original ABC still gets the blue ribbon.
..and if you're lucky enough to stumble upon a DJ promo, do NOT hesitate.
