as advised, i have added a two MM shim to my rega toneram after installing the grado red. the difference is huge. also this grado cartridge is phenominal and i am bummed that i let all of the talk of hum with rega arms cause me to wait so long before sticking one on here.
if anyone is interested, i shimmed the arm with washers i found through mcmaster.com, where for 5.95 i got 10 1 mm thick washers that work perfectly. i couldn't see the sense in paying 15 dollars for .50 steel washer.
Follow Ups:
I have a Rega P3/RB300 with a Grado Platinum Reference.
Where exactly did you put the shim?
Does the tonearm have to be lifted off?
Just trying to visual what I may need to do.
And what was the McMaster part #?
the mcmaster part number is 98089A404. it is a 10 pack of 18-8 stainless steel washers with an ID of 25mm and an OD of 36. there is a very slight amount of play but it is fine. just line it up as you like are you tightening the tonearm nut.i removed the arm from the table and placed the shims on the arm stub between the arm and the top side of the plinth.
it took about 2 minutes. (and most of that involved going to the next room to look for a philips head for the strain relief).
The Red is a nice cart. Had one once. I, too, use a 2mm shim under my RB300 for the Denon DL-160 I'm using. Just about any cart other than a Rega is going to require a spacer when installed in a Rega arm (unless you have a VTA adjuster added to the base). Rega carts are shorter than most other brands/models.
Enjoy the Red. It really opens up after about 50 hours break-in.
