I've been waiting for a 2270 to come up in my area (Phoenix) on ebay, and a 2275 in nice shape popped up today. Anybody have an opinon on the 2270 vs. the 2275, will either be a great improvement over my 2238b?
Follow Ups:
It was brought up to date after Marantz discovered they made a mistake with a component on the tone PC board of some of the earlier model receivers. The bane of the early Marantz 22XX line was the 2SC458 transistor and underrated electrolytics. It seems that when the model 2X line was designed (Model 22 for instance) the low level audio circuits were powered by 25VDC. With the advent of the 22XX line some of those circuits, specifically the tone board was migrated into the 22XX line. The power supply voltage was upped to 35VDC for better headroom. It slipped through the cracks that the older circuit was designed for a lower voltage.
Two very common problems exist because of this mistake; A channel will cut out after warm up, or will crackle loudly. If you look at the circuit of a 2270 Tone Board you can see that this is a later schematic, but some of the badness still exists. Electrolytics C407 and C410 (one channel) are still 25 volt caps. The second problem is that one of the transistors used was an Hitachi 2sc458, this device is not rated at 35 volts either.
If you are restoring or repairing a 22XX receiver, replace the 25 volt caps with 35V or higher caps (don't use tantalums), replace the 2SC458's with something better such as the 2sc1000.
Otherwise, the 2270 is no better or worse sonically than any of the other 22xx receiver models IMO. Neither is the 2238, etc. I have a 2250B, and have heard many of the other models as well, and as long as they're not pushed past their power limits, I don't hear a big difference between the various models.
You can't go wrong with a 2270. I have 2 and they sound awesome. Lots of bottom end bass punch even without the loudness button, and dial in the treble and it's analog heaven. I may be persuaded to part with a unit if you want to email me.
Johnny, I know of a mint 2270 with cabinet in Phoenix. Email me privately with contact info and I will pass on the seller info.
sonicjohnny,I have a 2235 (bought new) and about ten years ago bought a 2275. Two frinds have 2270s, so I've heard this one some too.
Perhaps I'm prejudiced by famialiarity-having the 2235 since 1973, but of the three models I still prefer the 2235- it's just a bit smoother- less grain- and little sweeter, better mids, and lighter on it's feet (dynamic) than either of the higher power ones.
I use Spectrum 208 speakers which are not too efficient and at the levels I listen I don't notice that the 2275 is substantially more authoritative.
By the way, since 1973, in continual use first in England and the US, the 2235 has only ever had one repair- panel lamp!
This probably doesn't help!
Cheers,
I think you should wait for a 2270. My preference for Marantz receivers is as follows:Model 19
Model 18
2270
2230While many Marantz receivers are very good, these are my favorites and I would hold out for one of them. Now remember there is one exception to this list, if you want to use 4 ohm speakers the 2270 is not a good choice. That combination just doesn't work very well.
Frankly I would think that the 2275 and your 2238b would be very similiar and just a small step down from the four receivers listed above. But hey that is just my oppinion and you may perfer other models.
Good Luck.
I wouldn't say it would exactly be an improvement but it does have a different sonic quality to it. I think you may find it a bit more mellow or tube like compared to your 2238B. But I think you will like it. My favorite in that type of Marantz is the 2230.
