I posted here a week or so ago about a dropout in the left channel. Thanks again - it's been fine ever since I cleaned some switches and pots. As I said in the last post, I found this amp out for the junk in the alley behind my house last summer. Now, I've had it hooked up to modded Magneplanar MG II's since last then. But here's the odd part. I've owned and also people have dropped by with high power transistor monoblocks and high power tube monoblocks (such as 225-watt VTLs). No amplifier that I've had in all these years has controlled the bass and had such a wonderful, detailed yet lush sound on those Maggies than this Sansui. The large thump of a full orchestra would make you jump out of your seat; the dynamic range is superb. So what I'm asking is why does a 25-year-old Sansui amp outperform these other amps? Some technical person out there have an explanation? We're not talking small, subtle differences here - we're talking large ones.
Follow Ups:
Technical reason - synergy. Somethings just go together well.
and I have never seen anyone use bigger/badder power supply transformers in their units save for TOTL/pricey stuff like Krell. I have a Sansui 9090DB that has a power transformer that puts my Marantz 2285B to shame! And the Marantz ain't no lightweight either. The Sansui is a daily user in an aerobics studio so you know it's being asked to pump out the watts. Very nice warm sound. Now if it wasn't for the damn dolby section....aaarrghhh.
I cannot give you technical reason as to why your Sansui sounds so good next to the "new" stuff. Never owned a pair of Maggies but they are one the wish list. Once again the 70's strike. There was a lot of well built amps and receivers back then. You got a good match with that Sansui and your Maggies. Thats what it is--a good match. Just like my Pioneer QX-8000 and my JBL L100's and a pair AR 4X on the rear, another good match! Who would guess. Not much call for the old 8000 Quads. Its musically very nice with these speakers. It beat my Piopneer SX 850 and a QX 949 Quad that were hooked to these speakers. You have nothing in that Sansui. I have $47 in the 8000. The fun and satisfying part is the low cost with a real nice sound. Enjoy! Happy New Year!!
Regards,
I second the great-sound-for-cheep sentiment. My bedroom system is a Sansui 6060 I got at a thrift for $4. Replaced the dail lamp fuse on the power supply board and cleaned the controls. It matches well with the little Polk 4a's I have on my desk. Makes sitting at the
puter that much more pleasant. :) I'm normally not a tone control user but the bass control on the 6060 set to +6 picks up where the little Polks roll off and bring the bottom more into balance without affecting anything else. Very nice design, and it's built like a tank.
