The woofers on a pair of Advents that just went for $210 on ebay do not look original to me. Am I wrong?http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3066204966&category=14993&rd=1
Follow Ups:
Here is a photo I just took of my 1st gen Advents. The tweets have the date Sept 1973. These are original except for a recent refoam as they have been sitting right here since Sept 73.The differences are
1. Tweeter is different (2nd gen ferrofluid cooled)
2. Woofer steel and missing masonite ring
3. Woofer placement higher up on second gen
4. Velcro blocks for grille cloth different shape on 2nd gen
5. Baffle black on 2nd gen, hardboard color on first.
On the walnut veneer ones...
6. Trim around edge has lip on first gen, smooth on second
7. grille cloth and trim around grille cloth square on 1st gen round on 2nd
So far as I am aware the cabinets are the same on first & second gen vinyl wrap (utility cabinet) versions.
Others may have additional items. This is like asking '57 Chevy collectors whether theirs has the one-piece or the three-piece front bumper (both exist and the difference is easily spotted if you know what to look for )Rumor has it there are a few late '76 veneer Advents running around with 1st generation cabinets and the steel frame woofer and possibly new tweeter as well floating around. I have not seen an actual photo but I also do not doubt their existence.
I have a pair of the original New Advent Loudspeakers and the woofers look exactly like the ones in my speakers. $210.00 sounds like a pretty good deal to me too.
Many people refer to these speakers as The New Advent Speakers. Anyway the woofers look original to me and based on the pictures $210 appears to be a reasonable price.
THey look correct to me for 2nd generation Advents (1977-81)
which they are as is clear from the tweeters and the rounded corners on the grilles. The market really doesnt distinguish price wise between 1st & 2nd gen. The tweets in the second gen have better power handling. $210 is a fair and perhaps even reasonable price esp if they do not need significant work.
I just bought another pair that is also a second gen model (my first pair had the masonite ring woofers). Is it poor memory on my part or did they also move the woofer up towards the center of the box as well?
