Two of the most popular hi end vintage speakers- has anyone compared them?

Well having a restored set of Quad ESL's (The ESL not the mediocre 63), Tannoy 10" and 15" Golds I'd say all three are necessary. The 15" when I want real air movement and power, the 10" when I'm looking for a fast, open punchy sound and the Quad when I want to relax.
I've been completely unable to choose just one, I've owned the 10" and ESL for about 6 years now, the 15" is a fairly new addition, a welcome one for sure.
Which is better.... both... just depends on your mood. Every time I switch between these speakers I always ask myself "Why did I disconnect these in the first place?"
By the way, the Tannoy is much easier to place, the Quad takes the utmost precision.. not sure where the info below came from???
I have many times. For many years I had a set of Quad 63's and I still have a pair of Tannoy Lancasters with 12' Gold's which I have owned for more than 30 years. The 63's are terrific but mine were not very reliable and I had many of the problems with them that are well known, limited base, limited volume, kind of tuff on amps etc. Still when they were right, they were wonderful. I have been temped to try the new 988 or 989 or whatever the latest model number is but frankly I have two much stuff already. I have a feeling that the newer ones have a bit more build quality, they couldn't have much less!
As for the Tannoy's well they are my favorite speakers period. I love them. They do everything right. I will never part with them.
The Tannoys are more directional and room placement specific than the Quads, you will want the tweeters, which are in the center of the speaker on the Tannoys, to be at around ear height when listening, positioned a few feet out from the back wall and toed in slightly towards your listening seat as they will focus their soundstage quite accurately
The Quads need a few more watts to drive them to the same sound level as the Tannoys, are less fussy about placement and as has been noted will not develop any *real* Bass
Tannoys behave best in very large cabinets
While these are both highly desirable vintage speakers if I had to make a choice between the two I would go with the Tannoys
