I resisted these for a long time after owning them in the Seventies (been there, done that, y,know). But when I got another pair last year, I was very impressed by their top-to-bottom tonal accuracy. And since I can crank 'em a bit in this house, I am even more enthusiastic. Anything under a hundred is a good price for these in good condition. What's amazing is that they cost only $89.95 new.

As I sit here listening to my Advents, I'm reflecting on your comments on the A-25. I can remember J. Gordon Holt rating them very highly in the late 60's. The Advents, A-25's, KLH-17, AR-2ax, ADC 303Ax, EPI 100, and several other favorites were great sounding and excellent values in the late 60's and early 70's. So what happened? Where is the equivalent value today? For one thing, there is about a 5:1 decrease in the buying power of the dollar. So the $89.95 A-25 becomes a $450 speaker. OK, so I go look at $1000/pr speakers and I am still underwhelmed. So what's happened? We also need to remember that the speakers I listed above were not "high end" boutique models; they were sold in some volume and widely distributed.
The A-25 used some nice high end drivers. Many of the speakers today are designed with a different financial "target" and amp in front. And are designed for use with a powered sub. The crossovers are designed to compensate for the driver choices and their unwanted side effects, and that will suck some of the magic out of the speaker. It's funny but speakers have come a long way. But the end line is what is being offered at a reasonable price range hasn't come as far. If you have even the most basic of skills it's better to DIY speakers.
is that the drivers are still pretty much available (OK, the tweeter has evolved and SEAS has always done good tweeters) and no one, even SEAS, remembers that woofers CAN be built to require little or no passive contouring.
The 25FE-W is pretty darn close to being able to have no crossover. With it's 4 layered VC it has it's own induction to role off smoothly with. IT only needs a cap or MAYBE a low value coil to contour as needed. It is perhaps one of the few drivers actually built that could go without a crossover. But I would use a low value cap just for protection against end range distortions.

Hi gang,I purchased my Dynaco A-25s in the late 60's and I still have them. They are sitting on my bookshevles in my study and I am listening to them as I write. Clean clear sound with good bass response and every bit enjoyable as when I first purchased them. My Deluxe Advents are long gone, but the A-25's are hanging in there. I'm driving them with a Pioneer SX2700 receiver rated at 65 watts per channel, which is a few years old but still delivering good sound. I'm seriously thinking of picking up a Jolida 50 watt/channel tube amp. I miss my Dynaco SCA-35 tube amp that got lost in the shuffle when I retired and moved to a new home. (SIGH) In any case, if you can get your hands on a pair of Dynaco A-25 speakers in good operating condition, pick them up. You will be very pleasently surprised at the ability they have.
