Does anyone ever run into these any more? I have been looking for a pair locally and cannot find any. I used to run into them all the time.
Follow Ups:
much the same story for me. a thrift store in a nearby town gets on occasion various audio equipment. stuck behind a couple of pairs of speakers i was not interested in were a pair of nearly grey looking speakers that i recognized immediately by the grillecloth. twenty bucks for the pair with a one week guarantee that they would work. got em' home cleaned them up and they look near perfect. the grey coloring was nothing more than a lot of dust. they run with a fisher 500c and sound very nice on fm, especially acoustic jazz.
As luck would have it I picked up a nice pair of these day before yesterday. I went to a garage sale over my lunch hour that had LP's listed, and there were three milk crates of LP's. Thumbing through them in a hurry because someone else was thumbing through them at the same time I pulled out a few that caught my eye. The other person left so I was able to take my time Records were listed for 25 cents a piece, my kind of price! Flipping through , and what's this? Sheffield Labs "I've Got the Music in Me", I have been thinking of buying this of e-pay for quite a while. I found 2 more Sheffield labs and I ended up with 47 LP's and 12 boxed sets ( classical ). When I went to pay the woman who was having the sale asked what Iwas going to do with them and I said I play them all the time. She asked if I would be interested in a reel to reel, I said sure, she goes inthe house and hauls out an Akai GX 286DB in the original box. I opened the box and it looked mint, I asked her how much she wanted for it. She asked if $10 was alright. I said sold. Then I asked her if she had a turntable, she said yes and took me inside . The tt was a disappointment, a Technics SL QD3. It was mint, but I really wasn't interested. It was sitting on top of an Akai GXC-760D cassette deck that was sitting on top of a Kenwood KR 7400 that was hooked up to a pair of Dynaco a25's. I asked if it all worked and she turned it on and it sounded pretty good. I asked how much she wanted for the equipment, she said " How about $25 and I throw in the speakers?" I said sold again. Then she opened the cabinets under the stereo and started pulling out reel to reel tapes she had made and said I could have these for free I wanted them, I said sure I do and I asked her what was on them. She said,"pop, the Beatlesand all those records you just bought" She bought the albums and recorded them to to tape and then put them away, the records had only been played once! Didn't know what the speaker model was , but through searching I discovered they were the a25s. Iam impreesed with their sound for their size I think they are keepers.
The Heathkit AS-16's I previously advised you about are in Sarasota, maybe within an hours drive for pick-up. Still Buy It Now @ $15 the pair plus 6.5% sales tax for Florida residents. These are indeed bookshelf speakers depite the seller's floor stand description. With cloth woofer surrounds, only the original 'lytic capacitor requires replacement (easily accessed via the screw-removable back panel). These were a kit version of the Electro-voice EV-7 with builder-assembled crossover but factory pre-assembled & finished cabinets & pre-mounted drivers. Use Asylum email if you desire more info per AS-16 or EV-7 speakers (I have both with original documentation). I'd buy 'em myself except for the shipping factor.
Ron,I am going to see if the seller will allow local pickup. If he does, Sarasota is less than 1 hour away so I will give them a try.
You recommended changing the caps in the speakers. Have you ever changed the tweeters, and if you have, what were the results?
I originally was hesitant due to the units using cone tweeters.
I've trialed a Seas H519/35tffc 25mm silk dome with this woofer in this cabinet. While I eventually achived satisfactory results, I still prefered the critical vocal range of the original design (which crosses @ 1500Hz). That original cone tweeter measured extremely smooth with pink noise applied. The original 'lytic cap value is 6uf & I presently use G.E. 5uf polypropylene film from www.madisound.com @ 75-cents each. If you get 'em, email me via the Asylum & I'll send a free copy of the original Assembly & Operation Manual.
A very good tweeter BTW, but now discontinued.
There is a decent pair on ebay right now. I think the the word on the A25s has finally gotten around. Those that have them realize they will not fetch more than $100-150,if they did want to part with them,so why bother. I lucked out and got my A-35s for $10 at a Salvation Army last year.Haven't seen a a decent speaker there since.(i did find an amazing deal on some Sansui electronics though). Some of the Goodwill and Salvation Army employees I've spoken with tell me the managers have gotten hip on vintage gear and very little makes it to the sales floor.
I've seen about two pairs in thrift shops in the last year or two, one in horrible shap, one only a little better. A few weeks ago I picked up the Scan Speak clone version at an estate sale.
but they are mine and since you did not say where locally is, not many know what you mean by that.
I am in Central Florida. I used to run into them about 3 or 4 times a year. Of course now that I am looking for a pair, they have not shown up in about a year.
Wait...they where mine!Shameless gear promotion. LOL
Delete it if you want.
