I am in the market for a pair of Dynaco a25's for my bedroom. The pair I had about a year ago (which I sold) are sorely missed. I used that pair with a Harman Kardon HK430 Twin Powered amp. The sound was smooth, warm and sweet. Will the a25's sound that much better with tubes? I am considering using an amp around 10 wpc.
Follow Ups:
I have several pair of A-25s and have used them with a Marantz 2230 and 1060, Fisher X-202 (7189 tubes PP) and even a mono Grommes 20PG-8 (EL84 PP). I had the Grommes driving a pair of A-25XLs in parallel. All have sounded very good together. The Fisher was perhaps the sweetest sounding, probably due to the higher power. The Marantz 1060 with the XLs is a great combination. You may want to look for a pair of the XLs as they are slightly more effecient than the standard A-25s. I do not listen to music at high levels very much but I do listen to all types from classical to rock. Rock is perhaps where my particular systems break down the most, especially at the higher volumes. I am guessing it is the speakers weakness.
My current set-ups are the 2230 with the standard A-25s in the garage shop where I work 6-8 hours a day, The A-25XLs are set up in the living room with the Marantz 1060 and the last pair of A25s are set up as the front speakers on the surround sound receiver-some Panasonic 5 channel thing. The X-202 Fisher is in my office with the Warfedale W35s
Mine sounded 'best' with their accompanying Dyna st70.
There was synergy where the failings of both the Amp and speakers 'cancelled' each other's out.. pleasantly..
Nice, easy to listen to speakers.. but definitely Not 'Hi End' by any stretch of the imagination though.
The A25 is a very easy speaker to drive. It has a low Zmax and otherwise an almost ruler flat impedance. This makes it work very well with tube or solid state. I have 2 pair and my experience is that every amp I have tried on it sounds good. They are not very efficent though. I tried running them with an SCA-35 (EL84 PP for about 10 watts per channel). Simon and Gafunkel sounded great at low levers, but I thought it was severly underpowered for classical and rock. If I were running tubes I would want a minimum of PP EL34 but KT88 might not be a bad idea. They will sound great with tubes but they also sound great with a nice sand amp in the 60+ watt range.
My amps are a Sophia Electric Baby amplifier (10wpc push/pull tube amp), and Harman Kardon 430 twin powered solid state amp (25wpc but sounds very powerful. Which of these would be better?
The Sophia amps are 300B outputs. Correct? They should have a similar power output to my SCA-35. I expect you will have similar results. I think that the HK's put out more peak power than the 25 watts would indicate. It should work but I haven't listened to HK since the 80's.
I had a pair of Dynaco a25's with updated SEAS tweeters that I had powered by a HK430. There was more than enough power for any level of music that I desired. In fact I also had an HK730, and I could not tell the difference in performance. I ended up selling the 730 since it was not in as good of cosmetic shape, and had a slight right channel harshness.
Thank you for cofiming that the HK could do the job. Watts per channel and real driving power do not always coincide. For example, NAD amps sound much more powerful than their power numbers would indicate.
They should sound just fine with either but you'll have a lot more effortless dynamics with a decently sized SS amp. These are probably my fave low level speaker especially if you put the drivers in better cabs. A25's are really not that High Eff. This might not be an issue at bedroom levels unless you like to relive the 70's once in a while. Ah..... sex, drugs, and R&R. Thankfully my doctor only keeps me away from the drugs.
Tubes definately...but you may want more power...like 20-25/ch....I could be wrong though.

I should mention that space is at a premium (the room is only 12x10) and that I am modding them with either the updated SEAS or Morel tweeters. I am giving up a mint pair of Klipsch Heresys, so I want a pair of these. The Heresys are just too big for the room.
Hi, I have heard A25s sound great with push-pull EL84/6BQ5 amps.
The Heresys are that much larger ? Wow, Heresys are better than the Dynas, aren't they ? Where are you placing the speakers, physically ?
Like, are they off the floor away from walls ?
Have you upgraded the crossover caps in the Heresys ? Why get rid of these classics ? What is it about their sound that turned you off the Heresys ?
Back in the '70s, I used large Advents, which are a little larger than the Dynas. They had a smoother midrange, to me, and played much louder. But, the Dynas sounded better at low levels, certainly. However, had I more money, back then, the Heresys would have been my choice. Good Luck with your hifi search...
I think that you are misunderstanding me. I LOVE my Heresys. I hate to get rid of them, in fact I reworked the crossover with Kimbers and Dayton caps and Solen coils. The only reason that I am getting rid of them is for the cash, and because, since they are floor standing speakers, there is no real room to listen to them properly.I am going to put the a25's up on stands. That way they take up less floor space and are above my bed, where I can hear them when I am laying in bed.
I actually had a pair of modified Dynacos (updated SEAS tweeter and Kimber caps in the crossover, and preferred them to the Heresys in a previous bedroom setup.
i use my a-25's with a fisher 500c - sounds nice - i have a dynaco sca 35 integrated sitting around that i have not tried yet. the fisher put out 37watts per side.
